The Cool Store

by Amber on October 15, 2009

My sweet ickle brother turned 22 recently, and like all responsible sisters, I rushed out and bought him a very very last minute present. Thankfully the first shop I came across on my mad dash was The Cool Store.

Cool Store

As the name implies, they are retailer of rather cool and covetable goods, aimed at the more masculine shopper. Working with the double entendre, the whole space is set out like a modern butcher’s shop.

Cool Store

Cool Store

There’s fresh cuts of jeans hanging from the ceiling, stacks of sweet tees in a fridge and chunky gold watches and other accessories in a chiller cabinet. To get to the changing rooms you have to make your way through swathes of industrial grade plastic. It’s heavy – and makes a satisfying thwap, thwap, thwap noise.

Cool Store

My favourite part of The Cool Store experience? The gift wrap. Your purchases will be nicely wrapped up in brown paper and tape. Simple yet effective. It’s just how you’d get cuts of steak at your local butcher!

Deus shirt

So what did I get Hemi in the end? A soft cotton Deus Ex Machina Union tee. Good times! The kid was stoked…

HOT SHOPPING TIP

by Amber on August 26, 2009

Today’s hot shopping tip is to turn your shopping experience global. It’s time to take advantage of the plethora of online stores and your geographic location, to snag some bargains. So, say you’re like me, currently twiddling your cold little fingers in Oceania, there’s no better time than to plug in some Northern Hemisphere sites and check out what summer frocks they have up for sale. It’s also a fabulous opportunity to investigate new brands and designers.

Global Online Shopping

To get you started, I’ve listed a few suggested shops that do ship over yonder seas. Explore, save and hang out eagerly waiting for the delivery of some new threads by your letterbox.

If you live in the Southern Hemisphere:

- In case you were under a rock, a Southern Alp or on a self enforced break from the Internet (ha!), you’ll know that Topshop now ships to New Zealand and Australia! Summer frocks and rompers ahoy.

- American Apparel is great for boys, basics, nerdy accessories and ice skating dresses for summer. Hint: Find a shipping/discount code to make your purchase that much sweeter.

- Pixie Market is the home of many fantastically creative fashion designers. Plus there’s free international shipping for all orders over US$250.

- The Outnet, La Garconne and Shopbop are my picks for high end designer garments. It’s possible to find huge discounts on all the brands you covet at the end of season.

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, obviously you kids have hella more choices when it comes to stores & shipping. However you may like to check out these options:

- Witchery is an Aussie chain store – good for simple, elegant pieces. They love neutral colours and their jewellery/scarves/bags are fantastic.

- Cool as a… General Cucumber. A good place to pick up the best pieces from New Zealand’s darker designers. Highlights include Gothic stalwarts Zambesi, the luxe leather work of Deadly Ponies and Jaeha – Alex Kim’s brilliant label.

- MyCatwalk stocks a plethora of cute Aussie & Kiwi designers – including Romance Was Born (get in there for their new tights!) and Elke Kramer’s heart stoppingly awesome laminate jewllery.

I HEART MICHI GIRL

by Amber on August 12, 2009

Post image for I HEART MICHI GIRL

Here’s 5 reasons why I adore Michi Girl:

1.The talented meteorologist sends her daily weather forecasts (for Melbourne & the world) straight to your inbox – for free!

2. With every weather love letter she throws in a hot bonus shopping tip, which always proves to be an item of instant lust. Think darling space dresses, swallow necklaces and Where The Wild Things Are tees (…whatever, I know you’re obsessed too).

3. Cute competitions, for example once I won a hippo’s head brooch. Receiving dear sweet Harriet’s head in the mail made my week.

4. We share a penchant for the watercolour aesthetic, as seen all over Michi’s beautifully illustrated email missives.

5. The daily notes never fail to bring both good design and the lolz…

SHOP WINDOW SURVEY 19-12-08

by Amber on December 19, 2008

The last time I did a display investigation was in October , so it’s about time for a Decemberist shop window survey of Ponsonby Road, AKL.  Things are a bit low key here but there’s still some cuteness to be seen!

World Beauty

From top to bottom: Mason’s Men’s Store, Mei Mei, Widdess (with the cute lil knitted puddings), Jamie Boutique (book list to die for) and World Beauty (lights & giant letters ❤). Just a little touch of Christmas – but these are boutiques not huge over-the-top department stores. Um and I just had to show you those shoes even though there are no holiday decorations at all! Silver boots count as festive though, right?

Further afield, Fred Flare has a photo tour of NYC’s store windows – screaming CHRISTMAS! What are the window displays like in your ‘hood?

VINTAGE SHOPPING IN AUCKLAND

by Amber on October 18, 2008

I’ve spent many a happy hour stomping up and down city streets (everywhere) looking for vintage stock for Catch & Covet, but also just for the sheer love of adding to my wardrobe. You could say that when it comes to vintage, I’m as seasoned as a 1972 Christian Dior belt!

There aren’t many vintage stores in Auckland (comparatively!), nor are they large. Local girls serious about second-hand pop to Melbourne for the weekend, but that’s not for everyone… So I thought I would write a guide to Auckland’s best vintage stores.

This guide comes complete with a map (see the PDF download) and refreshment suggestions. Whether you’re visiting Auckland on holiday or you’ve lived here forever, I hope you find the guide useful.

Luckily, there are some note worthy spots to indulge in your vintage passion! They are all located handily around the CBD/city fringe areas, only a short stroll from one another. Our journey starts in the city, just off Queen Street…

TANGO
Little High St, access off Durham Lane and High St, City

This is what I’d call a classic vintage cave. Chock full of furniture, mannequins and lamps! It has a wide selection of known designers, thanks to European buying trips. It also has a fine selection of hats – get into the thick of the vintage hunt by trying on a few of them. Take heed though: prices have varied visit by visit in my experience…

Tango is our only stop in the central CBD. You might be interested in checking out the Recycle Boutique across Queen Street, but in my opinion it requires a weekly search and this guide is about edited collections! So onwards, up to Karangahape/’K’ Road.

… take a breather …

If you’ve walked up the hill, you might be in need of some sort of refreshment! Right before you hit the second stop is the lovely Verona café (169 Karangahape Rd). Delectable coffee, blood red flocked walls and cozy booths for slouching in. I highly recommend their affrogato.

If you’re doing this walk on a Saturday the Hari Krishna centre (286 Karangahape Rd) has free, yummy vegetarian meals – however you should try give them a small donation as well as a smile!

FUZZY VIBES JUNCTION
151 Karangahape Rd, Newton – 09 309 1451

You’ll spot this one by the spray painted signage and arrows pointing down the stairs. There you’ll fine the orange interior of the fuzzy cave chock full of groovy stuff. While groovy isn’t really my thing it might just be yours. They’ve got the usual range of threads, plus an extensive selection of home wares. I really took a shine to their mint condition fondue pots and retro tea sets. It’s definitely got a different vibe to the other stores!

FAST & LOOSE
Shop 3, St. Kevin’s Arcade, Karangahape Rd, Newton – 09 309 9063

Local stylists adore this den of 80’s pomp, which sits just on the corner of the iconic St Kevin’s Arcade. They have a great selection of garish gold jewelry (yes, this is a good thing!) and a few cocktail dresses to choose from. What really makes this store shine is the layout and careful curation of objects; grouping tooled leather bags on simple white shelves, and the separation of men and women’s clothing.

VIXEN
St Kevin’s Arcade, Karangahape Road, Newton – 309-8884

Right next door to Fast & Loose, in double the space, Vixen has a much bigger selection of shiny pretty things to choose from! With less focus on the 80’s Vixen is a fantastic port of call whether you’re looking for something amazing or just a pair of cowboy boots. They seem to have a spectacular never-ending selection of patchwork leather bags. It’s where I go when I’m looking for a well worn band t-shirt, or one with a summer camp slogan. Awesome!

PEACHY KEEN
374 Karangahape Rd, Newton – 09 377 2733

I have super fond memories of one particular piece sourced from this store. In my slightly gothy phase I found and coveted a frothy tulle 1980’s cocktail dress, which was then cut in half to make a ragged skirt. I lived in this black cake skirt. Since then, the store has changed hands but it still seems pretty good – lots of boots and it even has baby vintage wear! Friendly staff too, which is always a bonus.

191 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby – 09 376 2761
(To get to Tatty’s either walk along to the end of K Road and down Ponsonby Road, or catch one of the striking green Link Buses for $1.60)

A mixture of vintage and designer resale, Tatty’s made the list as it has some gems for all budgets! I’ve seen Ann Demeulemeester pieces here as well as a lot of local New Zealand high fashion. Tatty’s has wonderfully friendly staff and illustrations by local artists on the walls. Also, look out for their ridiculously cute and well-dressed possum.

Conduct your vintage celebrations and commiserations over the two-sizes too small shoes at the daintily named café Agnes Curran (179 Ponsonby Road). Here you can enjoy a lovely tea or coffee surrounded by their retro-wares. If you’ve still got money left over, this would be a good opportunity to buy the milk jug of your dreams.

Even though these stores are vintage specialists (as opposed to charity/thrift/op shops – a whole ‘nother ball game there!) there are still some tips that will make your experience superb!

  • The first thing I do when vintage shopping is to feel the fabrics, often along an entire rack before I pull any garments out. The higher the material quality, the more likely you are on to a wicked find.
  • Things can be taken in, but not often made to fit a bigger sized body… So if it’s obviously too small, give it up! Some creativity can be exercised, for example: vowing to always wear that boy’s button-up-shirt undone.
  • Choose your vintage shopping outfit wisely. I recommend slip on shoes or flats, a simple skirt and a singlet top, layered with a cardigan if it’s chilly.
  • Also, take a sturdy, large bag with you. There’s nothing worse than moving on to the next stop with a handful of plastic shopping bags. Buy your clothes, stash and flip your bag over your shoulder. Keep both hands free!

Phew, that’s it! For easy reference, here’s a PDF with map and store addresses for you to print out (click on the image or the text link).

SHOP WINDOW SURVEY

by Amber on October 8, 2008

I have been intending to conduct an investigation of local shop windows for quite a while… I took this photo this morning so I guess I’m starting now! This is the current Louis Vuitton window display in AKL:

LV

I love it. Every so often they change out the bag/gloves/sunglasses. It’s a glowing golden yellow yolk on quite a cold looking strip. Previously the display was row upon row of stark white globes, reminding you that yes, we are a global brand!

Boutique

Here is a bridal shop in the arcade where I work. Plain, simple flower arrangement but that fuchsia dress punches you in the eye and makes you look. Imagine wearing that to your wedding – there would be no doubt who the star of the show was!

This lovely mish-mash is a bookstore on Dominion Road, Auckland. Crammed tight full over treasures, it’s like looking into a jewelery box for literary types:

Bookstore

This mission has been inspired a lot by Sandra Juto and her amazing photography of the Swedish city, Göteborg/Gothenburg. She is also the founder of the Flickr group Window Shopping.

It seems that window dressing is a bit of an alchemist’s game! However, I am looking to documenting Auckland stores and discovering that yes, there are some beautiful (and hapazardly winning) examples of it here. Of course, stores located in the beyond will also be documented when I get there! Watch this space.

NEW SHOES

by Amber on August 14, 2008

Voila, my new (vintage) boots from Inzivil, braving the dreadfully soggy streets of Auckland! They’re incredibly comfortable and were cheap – a definite score. I look forward to wearing them with this season’s floral printed tea dresses, as well as black skinny jeans and oversized shirts.

Inzivil is a new online store featuring the fine work of Australian and New Zealand designers (and some vintage to round out the selection). It was founded on the thought that there is simply not enough fashion from that geographic locale available online. It’s a great idea, I can imagine the homesick Kiwi girls of London checking out fresh new designs from their hometowns, snapping them up and flouncing along in style to the Portobello Market.

The name Inzivil really works for their offering too, a definition from their site:
“Inzivil (a German word literally translated to English) means ‘not in uniform’. At inzivil we think fashion should be spontaneous, fun, individual. The last thing it should be is a uniform.”

Designers sold include: Two White Buddies, Ellery, twentysevenames, CHIP CHOP! and shoe designer Kathryn Wilson.

The NZ Herald has an interview with Anna Hayes, site owner on her style & obsessions. It’s really nice to see New Zealand ecommerce finally starting to develop, and I love my new boots!
