Here is a sampling of work from the other talented photographers who feature in the frankie photo album vol. 1 – these are my favourite shots off their websites. They’re such a clever, diverse and global bunch!
Martina Gemmola – from Australia, currently freelancing in LA:

Salva Lopez takes some wonderful pictures, and her website is beautifully designed too:

Lani Dafter loves film and it loves her:

Ye Rin Mok has been on my radar for years now – I’d describe her work as a telling an entire in one shot:

Yelda Yilmaz has a knack for capturing people and interiors, just so:

And the winner of the frankie photo album volume 1 is lucky number 13 (thanks to the old randomizer) – Sarah-Rose from Wellington. Congratulations!
Thank you so much to everyone else who entered, especially those of you who shared your frankie connections/memories. Super sweet. If you’re still keen on the book, you can buy it from the frankie website ❤

Lula describes itself as “the magazine the contributors want to read”… and if Lula Magazine was a person it’d be a dreamier, prettier version of your favourite florist/tattooist. The girl that has always worn white lace dresses and custom painted her doc martins, no matter whether it was on trend or not. She’d be a fan of the Virgin Suicides and smell of Anna Sui perfume. Lula is up to issue number 8 and is still indeed the girl of your dreams.

The cover…
Dripping down the spine of the magazine is a sparkling and bejeweled chain necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels. On the front cover you’ll find Chanel Iman looking decidedly dewy and wholesome in an eggshell blue palette. All clothing on the cover is from the Luella SS 2009 collection. While beautiful, I find the image a oddly composed, they have cut off the body in a way that looks dowdy and almost submissive.
The story line-up…
Edith Beale (of Grey Gardens) as a style icon, a fantastic piece on a life-sized dollhouse, as well as interviews with Luella Bartley and Erdem.
The pictures…
The Bow Wow Wow shoot of ribbons and head adornments (naturally) sent my heart racing. Overall expect lots of semi-charmed soft focus editorials, punctuated by sharp shocks of colours, such as regal purples and yolky yellows.
Of note…
Perfect Mess, a look into the decadence of this season’s creative collections. The article is accompanied by some frightfully darling pencil drawings by Jonas Löfgren.
In your hands…
Luckily Lula seems to be available far and wide through the universe. I bought my tome for NZ$31 which isn’t too bad. It is fairly hefty! Also, the Lula Magazine website has archives of the magazine in the form of interactive flip books you can look through. A sweet taster that leaves you wanting more!

If you haven’t taken the time to peruse The Paris Review’s interview archives, please do so now. My favourite interviews include William Burroughs, John Irving, Joyce Carol Oates and Haruki Murakami ❤ … and that’s just the start of the list!

I find it particularly lovely that the Review includes snapshots of the author’s original manuscripts, all usually marked up to hell. Of course having the orginal magazines with their quirky covers would be fantastic, but it is such a gift to have the interview transcripts online to nibble away at at your leisure.
All of them offer so much joy, insight, awe and loads of inspiration. For example, I learned that Ms. Oates believes art is a genuinely transcendental function which allows humans to rise above limited states of mind; so therefore being in the “right mood” to create is a fallacy. Definitely food for thought. What does your favourite writer say? What can you learn from them, do they help you see the world differently?

The latest N.E.E.T – 012 September – is hot off the digital press, if you haven’t checked it out already! It’s great so see indie people getting out there and making it happen. There’s some quirky fashion and cool street style content – I just wish there was more of it, a little more meaty, you know?
A taster of the good stuff:

Do you guys know of any other digital magazines worth checking out? Independent or otherwise, I’d love to know!
1am, a fashion magazine, launched this week. Borne from the creative minds of Glenn and Amanda Hunt, it’s fashion in large format and tactile. This pair were the brains behind wishuwereherexxx magazine, which was luscious and brilliant (I dare say I still have a few issues hoarded somewhere), so I’m looking forward to this “monthly joyride of visual, mental and emotional stimulation”. The first issue, cover below, features the Lovefoxxx from crazy-sexy-insane CSS. Look out for it in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and North America.
