Lana Del Rey is a name you’ll probably be heard said a lot in months to come – whether you believe the hype or not. The singer-song writer, also known as Lizzie Grant, is making waves across the globe for her smokey jazz vocals and despairing lyrics. Her stage name is an odd mash-up; the first part inspired by the old Hollywood glamour of actress Lana Turner, and second part taken from the Ford Del Rey car.
Right now I really her début single, Video Games. It tugs at my heart. My other favourite Lana Del Rey tracks are Blue Jeans and Kinda Outta Luck.
At first I wanted these two Japanese jazzalbums based on the track listings, but after seeing the cover artwork, I’m coveting the entire package.
Simple use of block colour, bold lines and a cute play on the theme all adds up to some pretty striking illustrations. Definitely worthy of framing. Have you seen any great record covers lately?
Western Edition, a San Fransisco skateboard shop (the finest since 99), has designed this series of boards based on Miles Davis’ 59′ band – 5 of the musicians who played on the legendary Kind Of Blue record.
They’re being produced in celebration of the album’s 50th anniversary and Western Edition’s 10th birthday.
From left to right we have: Paul Chambers – bass, Bill Evans – piano, Miles Davis – trumpet, John Coltrane – tenor sax and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Amazing.
Check out the Western Edition site for more other breathtaking decks, like the Hard Edge series; an ode to the painting movement of the same name started by Los Angeleno painters in the 50’s and 60’s.
