Fashion

It’s April and winter is undeniably bearing down upon Auckland. Dreary! These are a few of the things I’m lusting after right now, that might make it a bit more tolerable & stylish. There seems to be a strong animal theme running through this collection.

Jacket

Brokeback

Jacket

On Saturday, I found this winner at a Karangahape Road vintage store – I am lucky to live one block away from a stretch of fantastic thrift stores & op shops (This Is Not A Love Shop, Vixen #8, Tiny Space and Aunty Mavis are my favourites). I have been obsessed with denim shearling jackets, aka Brokebacks, from the film Brokeback Mountain for a while. This one will definitely be keeping me snug over winter.

Some of the most stylish Auckland ladies I know are having a stoop sale this weekend. As the poster says, there will be heaps of vintage clothing, accessories, shoes and more. I’ll be selling items from my vast vintage collection, including some lovely winter coats. So come along and snaffle a bargain!

11am till 4 pm, Saturday 19th March at 28 St. Kevins Arcade (off Karangahape Road)

Of course no sale is truly hyped without an accompanying video promo, so check out the one Juliet made. And a Facebook event, rad!

Derek Hydrangea T-Shirt dress by Karen Walker. It was possibly made for me…

(Thank goodness it’s not sleeveless though – that would be too much.)

A navy vintage lace gown, found on Saturday afternoon at Peachy Keen on Karangahape Road, Auckland. Total bang for my twenty bucks. I’m thinking of altering it to fall just above the knee. On the other hand, it looks gorgeous simply hanging on my wall. Decisions, decisions.

Auckland is as humid as a cigar bar during summer and I have a few weddings to attend this season. This means forking out and frocking up, while still trying to stay cool. I wish I had one of Shabd’s hand-dyed Solaris Dresses hanging in my closet; it’d be the perfect smart-casual piece to slip on. Because it’s made of breathable silk, I might even be able leave the shaded comfort of the marquee…

Being no longer stuck in the year 2006, I find cuppycake iconography totally overcooked and a bit twee. But I can’t help but smile when I see this “Bake Someone Happy” tee by Parinto. It’s true! Baked goods make the world go ’round.

Designer Stephen Richardson says “Back in the 1970′s my dad’s advertising agency produced some sweaters for a client with the slogan “Bake Someone Happy” on them. He gave one to my mom and for whatever reason that slogan has always stuck in my head. To cut a long story short, this design is a nostalgic nod to that long-gone sweater.”

Look how stoked this guy is:

I am really loving the aesthetic of nose rings at the moment. They impart a certain air of nonchalance. Evoking thoughts of wild creatures that can’t be caged. I’m not sure a nose ring would be the right look for me. Tempted though. Hmm…

Feel free to chime in here, Mother.

A few things of late that have been making me happy/curious/excited:

1. Actual boats. If you’re in Auckland, you can go sailing quite cheaply for a few hours on the beautiful Waitemata Harbour. Voyager, the Maritime Museum of New Zealand, has a fleet of heritage vessels that you can go to sea on. Once the weather is better, I’m out there.

2. Narcotic Venus by Nasamotto. An intoxicating scent based on tuberose blossoms, a gift to myself. I feel womanly when I wear it, as opposed to Miss Dior Cherie, which makes me feel girlish and light. Read a full fragrance review for a better idea of how amazing Narcotic Venus is.

3. Book Club For Drunks – the 4th Edition. This time we are reading and toasting to Truman Capote’s Breakfast At Tiffany’s. It’s a stellar novella, dripping with scandal, I can’t believe I never got round top reading it before. New York, flighty girls, drinking and a cat.

4. Army surplus. I bought a binocular case at my local the other day, as an alternative to a saddle shaped leather satchels (having broke a few of late). While it’s eons old, it’s well made and can withstand wars so it might be able withstand me. I’m also quite keen on buying a green M65 style field jacket. I will promise not to wear them together though.

5. Penguin classics. I feel like I only read orange books now days. My room is awash with well thumbed copies. Anyway, I just finished reading Timothy Conigrave’s Holding The Man. Are you in need of an epic sob? Read this. Heartbreaking.

I hate space. Well, at the least I dislike thinking about it. Sometimes I get mildly freaked out when I look at the star tattoo on my ankle and start thinking about real scary clouds of gas that one day are going to explode and kill all life in our corner of the universe… Ahem.

However sometimes it can be real pretty. Like on Christopher Kane’s latest resort collection. To be honest I’m not really looking at the cuts, just enraptured with the digital prints. It’s a huge step up from last year’s dismal choice of graphic.

Gorgeous. Sadly, one of those frocks is not within my financial grasp. So I bought the next best thing – space knickers:

Thanks Bonds. They are much cuter in real life; totally galactic fantastic. Now I can wear the universe underneath everything I own!

Despite the fact he was married at least thrice and mostly sounds like a old womanizing trout, Hugh Grosvenor – 2nd Duke of Westminster, was one of the biggest romantics ever. In 1925, he was introduced to Coco Chanel after a party in Monte Carlo and passionately pursued her. It is said that once he hid a huge uncut emerald at the bottom of a crate of vegetables for her. Another story says that he showed up at Chanel’s apartment with an enormous bouquet of flowers and was only recognized after Coco’s assistant tried to hand “the delivery boy” a tip.

His most extravagant display of affection?

The dear Duke had her entwined initials placed on lampposts on the Grosvenor estate in Central London.  (This story is denied by the Grosvenor estate even today, but the lampposts still stand, whispering the truth.)  He was Chanel’s lover until 1930, however marriage was not on the cards for Gabrielle. She apparently declined, reasoning: “There have been several Duchesses of Westminster. There is only one Chanel.”

It was the little things that bothered me… Not being able to read the drinks board at bars(!), a few headaches, catching the wrong bus, and once, mistaking a bicycle for a very short person. Everyday my eyes were deceiving me in new and shameful manners. Time to get my sight checked.

(Yes, admire my poor edit of this ad)

I tottered up the road to my local optometrist, which by sheer good luck happened to be Occhiali, a store known for its fashion forward approach to eyewear. I went through a barrage of fascinating tests, confirmed shortsightedness and then moved on to the fun part – choosing frames.

LA Eyeworks: They design fun plastic frames in a huge range of colours. I like the owl-like look of these Pip frames but they would make my face super-duper round.

Ksubi: I thought about going brand-matchy-matchy with my sunnies, by getting the most extreme pair of eighties jammers out there. They certainly made a statement, but would I want to make that statement every time I went out to dinner with my parents? That said, they also had some sweet fawny glasses.

Colab: I adored the round glasses with the keyhole bridge, and earnestly considered the very serious two tone frames from Colab’s range of optical eyewear…

The grand winner however, is a pair of gorgeous Chloé spectacles:

As Occhiali mention on their cute blog, oversized frames in neutral hues are big right now; plus they suited my (apparently very symmetrical) moonface.

Branding wise, Chloé is a class act; from the letter pressed box to little touches like a branded cleaning cloth and the tiny envelope with the warranty tucked away inside.

Despite the unexpected expense, I’m a very happy girl. Tip for pros: Occhiali offers a tax free service if you’re travelling internationally. As you might have noted, I’m in a hotel room in (South Korea), so they sorted me out a pick-up service at the airport. If you need prescription lenses and are going abroad soon, see if your optometrist offers this. It let me afford the cuter pair of frames, a sound investment! Alright, I’m off to sight-see now… literally.

Do not sharpen this image in Photoshop under any circumstances. So. much. texture. It almost makes me dizzy. That said, I’m regretting tossing my ancient crimping iron in the trash while moving house last weekend. Look what could have been!

These water-coloured/water-stained tee shirts by Daphne and Vera Correll are beautiful.

Almost enough to make me buy a white t-shirt, which would be a very rare event.
