Check out this tropical stop-motion video advertising fruit juice. Super slick and fun:
Boom! I love to see South American creative work. It seems my head is always turned north by those saucy Europeans. I’ve got to work on my Español (and Portuguese) and “see” more of the world.
* Yes, the title references a biscuit disco mashup. Wah, I hadn’t had coffee yet…
Ponyo loves Sasuke! And I love Ponyo. Once again too slow to catch it in the cinema, I finally was able to sit down and watch Hayao Miyazaki’s most recent film on DVD. It’s a treat – and my recommendation if you’re looking for something to watch this weekend. The basic plot is that Ponyo is a goldfish princess who wishes to become human after she falls in love. My very favourite part of the movie is when Ponyo licks the blood from Sasuke’s cut:
Fun fact – Ponyo’s name is an onomatopoeia, based on Miyazaki’s idea of what a “soft, squishy softness” sounds like when touched.
New York has invaded by 8-bit video game creatures. Shot in New York City (oh how I aprreciate everything so much more after visiting), ‘Pixels’ was directed by Patrick Jean. Bleep-bleep’n awesome.
Logorama is short film directed by the French animation collective H5. It was presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2009, opened the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and won a 2010 academy award under the category of animated short. A deftly composed film. My favourite touch? The Evian mountains.
Cayce Pollard would have a conniption if she saw this.
Going West is a books festival in New Zealand, and they’re going viral with video. The result is an animation of part of Maurice Gee’s novel Going West. It’s very delicate, intricate work, and simply beautiful. My favourite parts are the native foliage – cabbage trees, ferns and windswept manuka. There may have been 1000 paper cuts in the process – everything was made by hand – but it was worth it.
As a kid, I pretty much watched animation exclusively! Sesame Street (as seen below) had some great segments, Dangermouse was devilish and I really liked Pingu.
Lately I’ve been watching a lot of great animation as well – I’m quite keen to make a stop motion short film. That means a lot of YouTube ‘research’, and this week I wanted to share with you a few of my favourites:
WESTERN SPAGHETTI
A WOLF LOVES PORK
HUMAN TETRIS
SESAME STREET – PINBALL
Song by the Pointer Sisters – Sesame Street was rocking way before Feist did her thing!
