I’ve noticed a lot of cute projects using maps recently. Is it a trend or am I merely a travel bug obsessed with navigation? I think it might just be the former. Funnily enough I have my own map project in the works.
Anyway, here are my picks of the neatest accessories and art to get lost with:

Olivia makes stylish framed maps and thoughts… perfect whether you are near home or abroad! Are those map envelopes in the corner too?

With a wee purse from Map 29 you’ll always be able to get your bearings: “Map 29 was born when looking for a quirky, one off gift to give a friend in memory of our childhood friendship and where we lived. She loved it and told her friends who told theirs…”
Elisabeth Lecourt is the artist behind these exquisite map garments. As described by others already, they would look amazing hanging on a wall; perhaps above a travel-fashion-design writer’s desk?

Shannon Rankin/Selflesh also makes artworks out of maps. I’ve interpreted the selections above as a message that travel opens your mind, eyes, heart. Personal discovery stems from external exploration? Yes.
“I bought this at the Aotea Square market yonks ago… It’s still alive despite my thrashing. The screen print is of Auckland CBD street map.”
Making this post reminded me of my my old map bag! Do you already own something cartograpy inspired, too?

I’ve noticed this trend too, but I also thought that it might have something to do with the fact that I am travelling! I managed to buy a watch with a map of Berlin on the strap and face last time I was in that lovely city. I wear it everyday and it takes me back!
2304 REPRESENT, Yo! Thas ma ‘hood on that purse!
(please excuse my gangsta moment)
Bisous
3204* my bad. I’m tired!
wow! It’s me! thanks Amber for including me in the maptastic post. Sorry I didn’t reply to your message on the weekend, found another home for the ticket, thank you for letting me know, was just crazy busy as no doubt you were too! I found the perfect frames for the maps today finally, I have always wanted them in white but could not find. But consider them found! :) What a rambler, sorry. Thank you again!
It’s so weird, the little purse just screams to me ‘Melways’ map (Melbourne map) and your bag just screams Wises street map.. Funny how the maps have their own distinct style relevant to country!
Amelia: That is such a nice story – have you got a picture of the watch? My friend Melissa got a tattoo to mark her time in Berlin – it sounds like a really cool place. I’m working on a post about travel memories, watch out for it.
Alana: Hee, coincidence!
Olivia: No worries miss! You must have been exhausted after that week x
Monica: Now that you mention it… Wises feels really chunky & the Melbourne one has public transport (jealous, I want some decent options).
Oo. I love cartography. When we settle, finally, Craig and I dream of owning a vintage globe, sepia & ageing, with rhodesia & siam etc still in use.
Currently I do have an oval locket with snippets from the A-Z in it. One side depicts the Tate Modern and our London flat, and the other has St Paul’s. My favourite areas of London. Sigh.
