A VISIT TO BARBIE SHANGHAI

by Amber on March 31, 2009

barbie

“A plastic tan never fades.”

Barbie has just opened its first dedicated retail store in Shanghai. Comprising of 6 pink levels, it’s a place designed for girls and grown women (the ones with the disposable income) alike to live out their pink dreams.

The massive amount of space means there’s more than enough room for a candy bar, a fashion stage for Barbie runway events, a girl’s clothing zone and a “passport” counter.

GOING POSTAL

by Amber on March 31, 2009

I was inspired by my recent good mail day. Grateful also, to still receive tangible goodies in the post. While we all live in a digital world and I’m a digital girl, it’s still nice to have things to fondle. Paper to rip and little postal surprises, y’know!

Gavin Potenza stamps

A good letter or parcel can make your week. Someone has invested time in carefully crafting words, licking gluggy stamps and physically dropping it into a postbox – just for you. Time is one of the biggest gifts there is! Of course, there is no receiving without something being sent first, so we should all get on board and spread some mail love.

dot

Here are a few ideas to help share the good mail karma:

* Cultivate a delightful pen-pal relationship. Non-traditional of course! Mail local magazines, hard to find treats (in New Zealand in the 90’s, it seemed every kid had a penpal in the USA, to ensure a steady supply of Big Red gum), snippets of gossip you can’t share with your friends, mix-cds.

* Join in You Are Remarkable’s postal revolution.

* Make your everyday post the unexpected! This can be as random as you like. Pay your bills in parrot green envelopes! Write your addresses out in a luminous purple ink.  Sending a contract to your accountant? Then why not draw a picture of a gorgeously holey wedge of Swiss cheese on the outside of the envelope? (That last one is real by the way, thanks Lazarescu. My accountant is going to think I’m a complete nutter, but that’s kind of okay…)

* Participate in A Home For Alice – send in a polaroid of your home and the story behind it. A very sweet idea.

* Send thank you cards. I am a firm believer in showing your gratitude if someone does something nice for you, and I love writing and sending notes of appreciation. As a total bonus, people will think you’re mighty polite in today’s zip-zap email world.

* Collect the most heinous local postcards your corner store has to offer. You know, the cringe worthy ones that you hope a tourist would never dig out, the ones covered in dust and priced with a sticker from 1992. Take the postcard and send to a faraway friend. Lines you can use:

- ‘Wish I was there with you xxxx’

- ‘Remember that time…’

- ‘This place sucks with out the glory of your presences, you’d make it one hundred times better’.

* Send a letter to your grandparent or favourite old person. You’ll make their day and feel better about keeping in touch. You might even get some reciprocal mail!

Post Office Box

In the spirit of this post; if anyone would like a wee postcard/letter from China, please send me an email (amber@codeforsomething.com) with your address! I would love to bestow a GMD upon you.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE: 30-MARCH-09

by Amber on March 30, 2009

Hello… After a thirteen hour flight, a two hour stopover, another 2 hour flight and the world’s most harrowing taxi ride – I have arrived in Shanghai.

Photographic Evidence

PEK airport

Beijing airport

It’s awesome. Bustling, always noisy – I was awake at 5am this morning and already there were voices coming from the alley below. And the smells… You know you’ve arrived in Asia when your nostrils are flaring constantly, whether it be from dumplings or fish innards lying in the gutter.

Ah yes. Drinking in a bomb shelter on the first night. Excellent times.

This woman was the world's best hustler... I'll have to go find her again because I really do want a giant squid kite.

Right, time to explore! I think today I will be visiting the Barbie store, like the brand experience geek I am.

Alice Dellal. I hear you have a story, and that’s cool, everyone does. All I really care about is your hair. It makes me want an undercut. In any case, I’m growing it l-o-n-g. None of this short business any more.

DRESS CODE: BON VOYAGE

by Amber on March 27, 2009

Mini Dress Code! I was in Wellington for work a little while ago; and couldn’t resist going to into the Swonderful boutique & buying an adorable Bon Voyage Papercup tee. Swonderful is marvelous; an adorable wee shop packed with goodies. Also, what a fun name to swirl ’round your tongue! Go visit – 95 Victoria Street.

+ Uniqlo grey merino cardigan.
+ Papercup tee.
+ Waxed cotton skirt with lace edging.
+ Montana boots by Progetto. They are very comfortable to trot around the world in.

I am taking off.

Here’s a better shot of the print, as seen on a tote:

Cuteeeeee!

Apt as I am flying to Bejing tonight, then catching a domestic flight to Shanghai, where I have been warned I will get hideously lost. Excellent, a challenge – I accept.

Au revoir my friends! Or rather, zài jiàn!

CFS LOVES 15

by Amber on March 26, 2009

CFS Loves

Uh yeah, so this week is 95% about bikes and music. I like it that way – enjoy! Next week we’ll have something different however: CFS Loves China!

bike contrail

  • You know something is going to be AWESOME when 3 people send you links (thanks J, J & E!) to it… All over the interwebs and the streets, Contrail leaves a chalk line as your ride your bike, creating these marks on the road. They’re both beautiful and safety enhancing, designating the clearest path to ride.
  • Speaking of pretty riding, Top Shop is going to sell a collection of cycling accessories – mainstream for the win!  “The stylish new women’s cycling specific clothing and accessories company, Cyclodelic, is launching at Oxford Street’s Topshop flagship store on Thursday 9 April 2009. Designed and handmade by two female cyclists in their East London studio, Cyclodelic believes that girls who cycle don’t have to forfeit fashion over function.”

Cyclodelic

  • Just one more bike tidbit, a rad video of the Zoo York BMX Bomb Down Broadway. Adrenaline! These guys are mental – watch out for someone hopping over a BMW. Oh my.
  • Nashville Nights is my music blog of the week. I’m on the hunt for sick disco and I’ve found a few goodies here.
  • Are you a scribbler? Always doodling… but you really want to take it to the streets? The Walls Notebook has 80 untouched NYC walls ready for you to make your mark on. Super concept!

GMD (GOOD MAIL DAY)

by Amber on March 25, 2009

Hello! How are you? I’m well, quite excellent in fact. That’s in part because today I had a good mail day, one of those fleeting moments where the universes of international postal services align and mail actually is delivered!

An example of a bad mail ‘day’: Once I ordered a book on zines from Amazon, which never showed up so I ordered a replacement, which did arrive. Seven months later, yes seven, the original package appeared, with postal marks declaring it had meandered around the world; from Portland, to India, via Australia and finally to New Zealand…

A fine example of good mail:

amber

This package was from Pete – he’s quite handy with words (read his blog: Less Permanent) and an accomplished spoon hunter.

HRH - why so happy?

These are final pieces from London needed to complete my Alt Albion mission. Hurrah! Also enclosed was a copy of the magazine he edits, Art and Things. The rumours are true, send me silverware and I will pimp all of your publishing endeavours on CFS.

dot

Item number two on this GMD was an exciting parcel from Moo:

moo

moo cards

My very own pint-sized name cards. Excellent! I love the ‘kit’ the cards come in – filled with friendly touches like discounts and a card declaring us best friends. It was a speedy delivery too, which is always pleasing. I think I ordered my cards about a week ago.

smile

They’re so cute I almost don’t want to give them away…

My tax refund was also in the PO Box today, but it’s not so photogenic. Good Mail Day = smiles!

HOW TO LIGHT YOUR BEDROOM

by Amber on March 24, 2009

Lighting is incredibly important. It sets the mood, the atmosphere and the scale of a room. Would you rather go to a starkly lit dinner party or one possessing a comfortable glow? I think the glow is optimal; the lighting of our favourite little restaurant is something we should aspire to in our own spaces.

Light

Thanks to a past life as a cinematography student and current forays into photography, I’ve learned what makes people and eyes happy. Thus, I offer my view on how to perfectly light your bedroom, your boudoir.

masculine bedroom

dot

So how do we create friendly environments with light? My philosophy is to layer lamps across a room. This is to create rooms that we enjoy being in as well as simply shells in which to rest our bodies and keep our stuff. Aside from making the most of natural light sources, I believe there is one golden rule to great lighting:

Nothing is to be lit directly from overhead!

Bedrooms are for relaxing, not washed out faces. You want to feel your best in your bedroom, not be squinting and squirming at the sight of your nose casting bizarre cubist shadows everywhere. To achieve a warmly lit bedroom scene, I use three tiers of lighting: atmospheric, task and decorative.

ATMOSPHERIC:

These are the main sources of light in the room. I love the liberal use of standing floor lamps, preferably at different levels. However most bedrooms are average sized and therefore don’t necessitate a forest of lamps. A more appropriate set up therefore would be a low floor lamp (such as a globe), a table height lamp and a large standing light source.

lamps

TASK:

This layer is about the lights above your mirror and your bedside lamps. The functional stuff shouldn’t be neglected – making sure your bases are covered will make everything that much more harmonious and liveable:

  • It’s highly recommended that if you are sharing a bedroom, make sure there is two separately controlled beside light sources. Me? I like to have two lamps anyway, so it doesn’t matter which side I stretch out to sleep on, hee.

Side light

  • A light source above your mirror will save time; whether doing your make up, plucking nose hairs or just general preening. Fumbling in the dark always hinders “going out” preparation.
  • If you must have a desk or workspace in your room (if only we all had the space to make bedrooms only for sleeping and relaxing in), allow it its own light source, with a high wattage bulb. No need for utilitarian pieces here however… check out this piece of lamp porn by industrial design demigod Yves Béhar, the Leaf Light:

Leaf Light

DECORATIVE:

This layer serves the purpose of adding magic to your rituals (like drinking tea before bed), for romance and for when Stella McCartney hires your bedroom for a lingerie shoot or your mates band needs a suitably captivating location for their latest video.

  • Indulge in a variety of beautiful candles or use some sparkling fairy lights!
  • Embrace different colours – blue light disco or red light district? I wish a light rope came in a lilac.

red rope

  • Try digging around antique or curios stores to discover a crazy feature piece – I have always wanted a giant glowing matchstick as a centrepiece.  Go wild on this layer! Not just in quantity, but with your creativity.

Decorative

INSPIRATION/OTHER THOUGHTS:

  • Look to the books and magazines written by stylist and designer Isle Crawford. She is a genius at making homes 4 dimensional bubbles of happiness and aesthetic pleasure. In particular I like her book Home is Where the Heart is and Elle Decor back issues.
  • Bare bulbs are naff. Your bedroom is not a post-modernist Berlin cafe. If you must use something like this, multiply it – have 20 or 100 bare bulbs instead.
  • Browse the Apartment Therapy archives. They have a billion articles and photographic features on beautiful rooms. If you’re inclined to do-it-yourself, check out this tutorial on how to rewire a lamp – perhaps make your own version of this gorgeous tea party affair!

PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE: 23-MARCH-09

by Amber on March 23, 2009

Measuring the days by numbers. 7 days of craziness. Japanese food, t-shirts and damp velodromes hissing with the sound of J-pop bikes. Jazz, tea and the Notorious B.I.G. (the movie is ludicrously good, you should go see it).

Only 4 sleeps till I depart for the East. I’m preparing by consuming tubs of deliciously-bad-for-you fried rice, as well as packing and repacking. In my bag: scarves, a cute hat, boots, and of course a few pretty dresses for clubbing. I’m quite psyched ❤ Hope you have a fantastic week!

SHOE HUNTING

by Amber on March 22, 2009

I have spent a inordinate amount of time calling and visiting stores this weekend to find some shoes. Sold out. Everywhere. To be honest I don’t think they actually came in my size to start with.

If you can’t buy it you may as well blog about it, right? Kathryn Wilson Toyah boots, mutated uniform chic in a buttery grey leather:

HAPPY TECHNOLOGY

by Amber on March 21, 2009

Yesterday this popped up on my screen, a Very Hungry Caterpillar/Eric Carle logo for Google:

First day of fall...

Aw sweet. It’s one of my favourite picture books! Two reasons for the occasion – the start of fall in the Southern Hemisphere and the 40th anniversary of the book. Google also celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday with a logo recently:

Cute

Here’s the archive of Google’s special event logos for the last 10 years. 2008 was a cracker year, while 1999 is pretty much lifted straight out of Word art. I’m really enjoying these crazy tributes – tiny moments of search joy.

DRESS CODE: KIND OF BLUE

by Amber on March 20, 2009

My current obsessions: Karen Walker, jazz classics, delving deeper into the internet than ever before, the Jade Goody story (sad any way you look at it), wholemeal bagels with avocado, eureka moments and creating interesting outfits from the contents of a single suitcase. Empty rooms.

dress code

+ Karen Walker Wide Spiderweb shirt in faded black.
+ Dark Gray skinny jeans from Uniqlo
+ Wooden bracelet
+ Suede round toe mid-wedge from Witchery

dot

The perfect tee? Puff printed witty graphics and a cute crochet detail on the back. Tis very well cut too.

...

The beautiful empty room belongs to Willy & Ali, who have been kindly letting me stay for the last few weeks. I’m realising I don’t actually need so much “stuff” in my life to make it feel full. Feeling mellow and reflective. It’s good.
