VIEWFINDER: NEIL YOUNG – ACROSS THE AGES

by Amber on January 16, 2009

Neil Young has one of those epic careers that stretches across many lifetimes, garnering many new fans along the way. Today he is playing at the Big Day Out in Auckland (hi, hope you had fun if you went!) and then across Australia (lucky ducks!). The BDO is a giant licorice all sort of a festival – Neil’s in good company such as the Prodigy and TV on The Radio. I thought we should take a look back in time to other performances by Mr. Young across the years – with my favourite song, ‘Needle and the Damage Done‘. I think I love the 1970’s Young the best. He is so earnest, which is very endearing.

1971… On the Johnny Cash Show:

1985… At Live Aid in Philadelphia:

2008… Madison Square Garden in December (video taken by a fan):

Intriguing side note, every store and cafe I’ve been today has been playing his songs loudly. At Santos they even had a still wet portrait of him on the wall. Amazing.

I had to make a decision- Neil Young or Prodigy? Due to my age? I saw the latter but am sad I missed out. I definitly think they should have done Neil Young and Prodigy on the main stages, one after the other. It wouldn’t have been a smooth transition but at least everyone would fit and I wouldn’t have had to make such a decision in the first place.

Olivia, I understand your pain! I probably would have seen N.Y. because I saw the Prodigy in uh 2002? Sounds like it was a really good day anyway :)
